Artists for The Myth of Power were selected from an open call asking for individual conceptions of “power” in visual form. The result is a diverse range of artworks, whose imagery ranges from reactions to in regards to social doctrine, hierarchy, gender or racial inequity, or other forces of power, influence, including imagery of physical strength, heroism, idols, sovereigns, icons, etc.
Lisa Rockford, Curator of The Myth of Power, states, “My main objective in planning this exhibition is to discover and feature exceptional, under-represented local artists. It is also my goal that the exhibition will facilitate an enlightening discussion of cultural issues.
I picked the theme of ‘power’ because questions of power (be it political, economic, commercial, personal, etc.) seem to be at the basis of many prevailing current events that test the character of our humanity.
I have selected a wide range of artists whose works are contemporary and innovative, offer a strong visual impact, yet contain symbolism and allegory. Many of these works draw from popular imagery and question stereotypes and social mores.”
Cash Awards were given to innovative artworks, including an “Audience choice” award, selected by opening night attendees. This event was funded in part by a grant with the Broward Cultural division.
