FIBRATION: Poking Back

The intersections between pain, vulnerability, and the politicized body are explored through innovative, contemporary approaches to fiber, textile, and craft processes. Soft, playful materials are embedded with unflinching compositions and potent messages.
The body is a muse – scrutinized, manipulated, dismembered, and augmented as material incarnations that mirror bodily objectification from the historically pervasive male (masculine) gaze and other destructive influences that lead to emotional and bodily harm of the feminine.
Through the transgressive act of reclaiming handicrafts from their domestic origins, these artists re-examine societal norms surrounding identity, sexuality, and gender formation to consider personal mechanisms of strength, shields, and self-defense.
